The Ancient Science of Astronomy: From Babylon to the Big Bang

Astronomy isn’t just a hobby for stargazers. It is the oldest science humanity has ever practiced. It tracks the origin, evolution, composition, distance, and motion of every body and scattered bit of matter in the universe. We have been doing this since the dawn of recorded civilization.

The Babylonians get much of the credit for the earliest celestial knowledge. They watched the sky with a precision that set the stage. The Greeks then arrived with influential cosmological ideas. They began asking how Earth related to the rest of the cosmos. This was a radical shift.

For over 1,300 years, the world followed Ptolemy. His model placed Earth at the center of the universe. It was an Earth-centred universe that dominated astronomical thought until the 16th century. Then Nicolaus Copernicus stepped in. He assigned the central position to the Sun. This ushered in the age of modern astronomy.

The 17th century delivered a blitz of breakthroughs. Johannes Kepler discovered the principles of planetary motion. Galileo applied the telescope to astronomical observation. Isaac Newton formulated the laws of motion and gravitation. These weren’t just theories. They were the rules of the game.

By the 19th century, technology changed the game again. Spectroscopy and photography allowed scientists to study the physical properties of planets, stars, and nebulae. This led to the development of astrophysics. We moved from just tracking positions to understanding physical realities.

Edwin Hubble shook things up in 1927. He discovered that the universe was expanding. It was previously thought to be static. The sky wasn’t a fixed backdrop. It was a dynamic, growing entity.

Then came the hardware. The first radio telescope was built in 1937. In 1957, Sputnik launched. It was the first artificial satellite. This inaugurated the age of space exploration. Spacecraft capable of escaping Earth’s gravitational pull began returning data about the solar system starting in 1959.

We now look at the big bang. We study gamma-rays. We monitor infrared and ultraviolet signals. We listen to radio waves and radar. We track X-rays. All of this stems from that first glance at the Babylonian sky.

The history of astronomy is a history of looking up. And then figuring out what we were seeing. We are still doing it. The questions remain. The answers keep getting more complicated.

The expansion didn’t stop. It accelerated. Dark energy entered the chat. We don’t fully understand it yet. But we know it’s there. The universe keeps changing. We are just trying to keep up.
