Residents of Radley Road in Abingdon are strongly opposing a new parking ban set to take effect next week. The policy will prohibit parking on the street between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM, Monday through Saturday, in an effort to improve bus schedules.
Council’s Justification and Community Concerns
Oxfordshire County Council states the decision comes after a public consultation and is intended to reduce congestion and promote cycling. However, residents argue that the ban prioritizes minor gains in bus journey times at the expense of their daily lives.
One resident, James, voiced frustration over the situation, stating that the council is effectively disregarding the parking needs of locals to save a few seconds on bus routes. The policy will disproportionately impact families, elderly individuals, and workers who rely on street parking.
Electric Bus Deal and Policy Push
The move is linked to a broader agreement between Oxfordshire County Council and local bus companies. As part of a deal to bring 159 electric buses to the region, the council committed to increasing bus speeds by 10% by the end of last year. This parking ban is one of the measures taken to meet that goal.
Angharad Saunders, another Radley Road resident, highlighted the lack of viable alternatives: “We have very few parking options. Most homes are Edwardian and don’t have driveways, so we’re going to struggle.”
Data Accuracy and Resident Proposals
Residents claim the council’s data used to justify the ban is flawed and propose alternative solutions such as permit parking for local residents. They have united to challenge the decision, but as of now, the policy remains scheduled for implementation.
The situation underscores a tension between local convenience and broader regional transport goals. The council’s push for faster bus routes, while environmentally beneficial, is creating significant disruption for Radley Road residents, raising questions about how such policies balance public needs versus community well-being.
